Frostborn is a co-op survival game with MMORPG elements: team up with other Vikings to build a strong base, confront the creatures that hide among the shadows and in the shrines of the gods and fight other players during raids and random encounters in numerous locations and dungeons. You take on the role of a chosen hero in Frostborn: Coop Survival, who are fighting against Norse death goddess Hel. It is not the tired trope of saving a world while everyone dies as usual. In the game, there is a protagonist and other players are immortals. What started as a single player experience becomes more open-world as the game progresses. They’re immortal and immune to Hel, so they can live forever! Plus, they come back to life instantly as soon as they die. That’s pretty cool I think.
The game starts with all the Norse gods vanishing, save for the goddess of death. However, when the player character appears there have been enough years that all of the Norse tribes have formed and a single government has taken center stage. Though difficult, Hel’s magic has ruined the land and her zombie-like creatures have ravaged it, making only rain to drink.
You come across a Norse settlement. You meet the local shaman and are sent on quests to build their village. They aren’t just building it for you but for everyone who joins them. Some have been displaced during Hel’s machinations and are currently starving. As an immortal, you take on their leadership role and protect them with their help. In turn, they help you complete the shaman’s quests. The game eventually leads you to leave the Norse homelands and travel across the seas to invade England and France for resources. The ease in which you earn these resources depends on which class you decide to main.
