As throwback games go, Steam Punks has its share of moments. But because this game is heavily influenced by its predecessors, its nearly impossible to review the game in a vacuum.
The makers of the game, Monster Robot Studios, have been heavily influenced by the classic Megaman X games—possibly too much so.
Indeed, the only major difference between Megaman X and Steam Punks is the unique steampunk setting, along with a few features like the hub town, although the features don’t really add much to the overall experience.
Due to the similarities, the assessment actually becomes easier— if you liked Megaman X, you’ll probably like Steam Punks.
Now for the specifics. Steam Punks is a 2D platform game based on shooting, with the format consisting of enemies and traps.
The stages of the game can be completed in any order, but each stage provides the ability to claim a new weapon. These weapons have limited ammo, so that’s where the strategy comes in, and the last stage involves defeating a final boss.
One other issue with Steam Punks is the relative lack of polish in the presentation. Some stages are simply too long, and as a result it feels like the development team didn’t realize it was putting together a mobile title.
The interface is just as clunky, with stiff controls that become unresponsive at times, resulting in many unwanted deaths.
Despite these flaws, Steam Punks does have a nostalgia value that makes it enjoyable for those looking for this kind of game. The formula is less common these days, so if you can get past the lack of polish and uneven controls you’ll probably have an enjoyable experience with Steam Punks.
